The tide of emigration did not fairly set in towards Faribault until the spring of 1856, since which time despite the financial disasters of 1857, and the last four years' drain upon our inhabitants for soldiers, the population of the town has been steadily increasing. A few white settlers came in during the spring of 1853, and the first Territorial election for Rice county was held at Faribault in October of the same year, at which only seventeen votes were polled. In 1853 the present town site was occupied by some 600 Sioux Indians, and here Alexander Faribault had his Indian trading post. County seat of Rice county is situated in township 110 N., range 20 west, at the confluence of the Cannon and Straight rivers, near the center of the county, and is surrounded by one of the finest and best cultivated agricultural regions in the State. Archibald John S., proprietor of Dundas flouring mill. The village of Dundas was laid out in 1859. Situated in the edge of the Big woods, with all kinds of good timber close at hand, and being the natural centre of a rich agricultural section, Dundas presents good inducements to capitalists as a manufacturing point. The Minnesota Central Railroad which is already graded, passes through the village. The Cannon river affords a good water power here, upon which is located the well known Dundas Flouring Mill. A post village of Rice county, situated on the Cannon river, distant from Faribault, the county seat 12 miles, from the Mississippi river 30 miles, and 40 miles from St. Geo., pastor Protestant Episcopal church. Muller Passler, dry goods, groceries, &c. The town was settled in 1854, and is now thickly populated with industrious New Englanders, Germans and Norwegians. There is in the vicinity an abundance of hard wood timber, with some basswood and elm.
